Celtic Mythology is abundant with those endowed with the gift of prophecy and wisdom, and often even healing: the shamans and spiritual seers. They were said to have continuous contact with natural and supernatural forces and were often consulted as media through which to communicate to the "Other side."
Often these gifted few acted as counselors and advisors, as well as spiritual healers to great leaders. Most famous perhaps is the relationship between King Arthur and his advisor Merlin, often termed "Wizard." While some sages held very prominent and influential positions in Celtic society, others felt more bound to nature and preferred to live in solitude in the wilderness, wandering about.
